City Koprivnica

This is a town in northwestern Croatia, 20 km distant from the Hungarian border, situated in a green landscape. Its history is rich, e.g. the medieval castrum of Kaproneza.

Koprivnica was mentioned for the first time ever in 1193 and until the arrival of the Turks represented the centre of one of the largest Croatian counties and the centre of the Slavonian classes. For a while Koprivnica was the centre of the Varazdin area (generalat), while in 1765 Maria Therese took the city out of military jurisdiction.

Koprivnica developed significantly in the 20th century with the advent of the Podravka food industry, known worldwide for its Vegeta spice. They even have a museum of Podravka.

Worth mentioning is the annual "motifs of Podravina" event when the whole town becomes a gallery of naïve art. Many of the Croatian greatest naive artists come from the villages along the Drava in this county, notably Ivan Generalić.
