Sibenik was founded by Croats more than a thousand years ago. The first records of it date from the year of 1066. Sibenik has an important place in the Croatian construction heritage by well preserved historical core of the town and numerous architectural accomplishments of the monument category.
It is characteristic by its ancient fortresses surrounding it and by its monumental gothic-renaissance cathedral of St. Jacob, as well as narrow streets ("kalas"), numerous churches "scattered" round this town and its surroundings.
The town of Sibenik is exeptional by its unique position in the picturesque and wide bay on the mouth of the Krka river. It lies on the slopes of the hills where the Krka flows through its canyon and creates an estuary of the brackish water lake of Prukljan. There are many islands and the islets touching see side of this town situated in the centr of the Adriatic sea. These islands are stretched all the way to the famous Kornati archipelago. This region of the typical mediterranean climate, average annual insolation of 7 hours a day, sea salinity of 38 , provides various tourism resources: possibilities of continental tourism, rural one in the hinterland, river tourism (national park Krka), transit-urban, spa tourism (healing mood in Zablace) with a tourism complex "Solaris".
This complex comprises four hotels with an autocamp, where therapy and all opportunities of the recreational, medicinal, entertainment and other types of an active relaxation on the islands, on and under the sea.
A specific characteristic of the Sibenik area is vicinity of the two national parks, Krka in the North and Kornati on the sea side. Its geographical position makes it accessible from all other areas of the country and from the world. Traffic connections of all types, land, air and sea ones, are very good. Sibenik stagnated in the economic sense in the non-wanted war, which was imposed to this country, but it has managed to save its cultural treasure: rich folkloric activities, a unique International Child's Festival, its theatre life, exhibitions in the duke's palace which is the town museum today, its folcloric music, Cultural and performing society "Kolo", magnificient group singing ("Klape"), and what is most importarit its widfey open heart to receive you in this beauty and make you feel as You're in yuor own corner of the paradise.
