Krapina-Zagorje county - Krapinsko-zagorska županija is a county in northern Croatia. It encompasses most of the historic region called Hrvatsko Zagorje (Croatian Zagorje).

The Krapina-Zagorje county is a candidate for being the most idyllic county in Croatia: the many villages and small towns spread out across the hillsides are perfect for agriculture (vineyards in particular) and summer houses. The Krapina-Zagorje county boders on the Varaždin county in the northwest, Zagreb county in the southwest and southeast, and the city of Zagreb in the south.

In a cave on a hill Husnjakovo near Krapina, there are remnants of diluvial Krapina early man (Homo Neandertaliensis Krapiniensis 40.000-30.000 B.C.)

"Hušnjakovo” in Krapina is the most famous site of the Neanderthal man in the world due to the richest and most various fossil collection. It is protected st the first paleonthological nature monument in Croatia. Geological and paleonthological research was held between 1899 and 1905 and supervised by the famous scholar Dragutin Gorjanoić Kramberger. About nine hundred human fossil bones, numerous stone tools from the Palaeolithic era and fossil remains of animals were found in the layers of the cave. This rich site is about 130 000 years old. The museum exposition consists of the geological, paleontological and arhaeological collection, displaying rocks and fossils of Hrvatsko zagorje, the evolution of life on the Earth and the evolution of Man.

In the vicinity of the site, a new museum, The Museum of Neanderthal Man from Krapina is being built. The new architecture and museum presentation will give recognition to one of the most famous Palaeolithic sites in the world.

Hrvatsko zagorje is a historic region north of Zagreb, Croatia. It comprises the whole area north of Medvednica mountain up to Slovenia in the north and west, and up to the regions of Međimurje and Podravina in the north and east. Zagorje was split into Krapina-Zagorje county and a part of Varaždin county after the establishment of the independent Republic of Croatia.
