Town Našice

Našice - CroMapsThe name of Nasice is mentioned for the first time in 1229. Different forms of the name can be found in medieval documents: Nolko, Nolche, Negke, Nexe, Nekche, Vesice and Nesice. The secular owners of Našice and its landed estate were Abbas, David Lackovic, Ivan Korvin, Ivan and Nikola Gorjanski and the Ujlaky princes from Ilok.

The religious orders which owned Nasice were Knights Templars, Knights Hospitalers and Franciscans. The Turks ruled Našice  from 1532 to 1687. In 1734, Counts Pejačevic bought the landed estate of Našice, which remained their property until 1945. Two Croatian vice-roys came from the Pejačević family.

• the Church of St. Anthony of Padua, built in 1373, Gothic architecture with baroque elements  
• the old castle of Count Pejačević, built in 1811, late Baroque with elements of classicism
• the new castle of Count Marko Pejačević, built in 1907, late Baroque and classicism; the small castle built on the model of the Sanssouchi castle in Potsdam
• the mausoleum and chapel of Count Pejacevic, dates back to 1881, pseudo Gothic architecture of Herman Bollé; the grave of the first Croatian female composer Dora Pejacevic is located near the mausoleum and chapel.

The castles are surrounded by a park with various species of autochtonous, exotic trees and bushes. The park is a listed horticultural monument with an artificial lake from 1864. According to the 1991 census, Našice has 8,235 residents. The town is located in north-eastern Croatia, on the easternmost ridge of Mt. Krndija. The town has a rich social and cultural life.
