Town Nin

Nin - CroMapsThe historical town of Nin is situated on a small flat island, 1 7 km far from Zadar in the section of one of the bays, where the North Dalmatian coast ends. The settlement of Nin island and the continuation of life on it dates from the 9th c. BC. The Croatian settlers founded their town Nin on the ruins of the Liburnian town Aenona at the beginning of the 7th c. Nin suffered frequent destructions during its turbulent past.

This once a very famous town almost lost its urban characteristics. There were many destructors during the long history of Nin, but the sedulous hand of the builders were more effective. Numerous preserved monuments bear witness to this. The most outstanding monument, unique in its architectonic siyle, is a small Old-Croatian church of St.Cross from the 9th c.,called "the smallest chatedral in Europe", representing a gem among the cultural monuments of its kind one can see. However, there are even other valuable monuments: the Church of St. Ambrose (13th c.), the present Parish Church of St. Anselm (18th c.), the Church of St. Nicolaus (12th c.) immediately at the entrance to Nin the remains of the ancient temple, the remains of the town walls... The significant restoration works have been initiated only in the present century. Next to the Parish Church there is a little but very precious treasury of Gold and Silver of Nin.

Nin has also a very valuable archeological collection, although numerous worthy findings from Nin are kept at Zadar, Split Zagreb, Vienna and in Italy. If one goes only two kilometers farther from Nin, there is a tourist village Zaton which offers a beautiful view on the archipelago of Zadar. It is situated on a peninsula, and its old center is overlooking the island Vir. Next to Privlaka, there is a week-end settlement Sabunike. The blending of the rich past of Nin with the blessing of the sunny climate of the region, as well as the Mediterranean vegetation are the reason for the more intensive development of tourism at Nin and its surroundings.

In this place is the largest known deposit of therapeutic peloid on the Adriatic coast. The experts of the medical faculty at Vienna and at Zagreb analized the physical-chemical properties of this therapeutic peloid so that based on the excellent results a little outpatient clinic was built there, and an open air rehabilitation is performed during summer months there. The tourist area of the commune Nin is in fact an oasis of shallow long-stretching sandy lagoons, aside of direct traffic, and far from any industrial zone or great highways.
