Town Icici

Ičići - CroMapsIčići is a town on the northern Croatian coast with 1,000 inhabitants located on the Bay of Kvarner and in the heart of the Opatija Riviera, which has been renowned for its holiday- making facilities since as long ago as 1844.

The main coast highway which winds its gentle serpentine coils through a lush vegetation of noble laurels, palms and pines at the very edge of the sea links Ičići with Opatija and Lovran, as did a tram at the beginning of the century.

For your arrival you can choose car, bus (from Rijeka or Pula), train to Rijeka and Matulji, plane to Rijeka Airport or Pula, or your own yacht to the ACI marina. Two well-nigh symmetrical hills are linked by the great bay dominated by the lovely Villa Munz and the ACI Marina on the one side, a spacious beach in the centre, and the old harbour on the other side.

Here the summers are warm, but shaded, because Učka  (1,396 m), with its wealth of deciduous trees and Mediterranean conifers, makes the air both heady and medicinal. The winters are mild, free of ice, frost and snow, and are, thanks to the sea air, ideal for the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. In spring, which begins in January with the gathering of the first snowdrops and hellebore, the awakened mountain waters join up with the sea, splashing the gulls and the warm smell of earth from the tidily kept valleys. In autumn you can swim as late as October, and walk with new vigour and plans along the coastal path (11 km) or  wander foothills of Učka, as if on a long-lost and newly-found home, in search of chestnuts, mountain herbs, mush-rooms and game. The tourist facilities are wealthy and diverse  indeed, especially with respect to the accommodation they offer.

You can choose  your apartment or room in excellent, even  luxuriously appointed private houses and  villas. Besides the breakfast or the grill in the garden, you won't be isolated or feel the lack of your own everyday habits: almost every private villa has its own spacious garden, looks onto the sea, has its own satellite programmes and secure parking lot. If you are a guest in a hotel, you will be accommodated in the Hotel Ičići right along the shore, with its own beach, park and spacious, guarded parking lot.

Those who are fond of camping will find a beautiful natural camp in Ičići with a restaurant and tennis courts. As a Yacht Club guest you can use the safe and well equipped ACI Marina with its 360 moorings, 60 dry. You will be pleased with the restaurants, coffee bars, shops and motor boat and yacht servicing facilities. If you own a smallish vessel you can even keep it in the old harbour. Between the two tourist centres of fashionable Opatija and old Lovran, their crowds, excitements, entertainments and noise you have picked the ideal place for a holiday where the nights are quiet, filled only with  the chirping of birds. The great central beach offers, alongside swimming and sunbathing, opportunities for hiring boats, pedalos, loungers and parasols, wind-surfing, water-skiing, sailing, handball on the sand.

Those who are found of privacy will find a place for themselves along the shore path, over which the trees give enough shade for a break from the sun. As for sporting events of international importance, Ičići is host to tennis tournaments in the open and closed Clifton courts, to yachting races for several classes, and angling competitions the whole year round. Lovers of walks and recreation will find the coast path a real discovery. The full beauty it hides can be revealed only if you go on walks in every season and every time of the day and night, rain or shine. Let's go out now for dinner or a night out. Perhaps you'll pick one of the restaurants or cafes by the sea. The cuisine is made up of local or world specialities, sea-food and fragrant wines. The summer fishermen's fiestas in the harbour and on the beach offer joy, fun, dancing, good food and drink deep into the night.

Summer culture in Opatija, Kastav and Rijeka offers concerts of light and classical music, spectacles, performances, operas, museums  exhibitions, open-air cinemas. Those guests whose restless spirits seek still more might like to take a trip to the parish church in Veprinac, go riding on Učka, visit the market place and fish market in Rijeka, tour the medieval towns of Istria (Roč, Hum, Motovun, Beram...), and take trips to the national nature parks of Risnjak, Plitvice Lakes or Paklenica or take ship for the islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj and Rab.
