Town Jastrebarsko

The town of Jastrebarsko is situated 30 –odd km southwest of Zagreb, at an elevation of 154 m, exactly there where the scenic green hillocks join the large valley of the Kupa River basin.  Jastrebarsko has 6000 inhabitants, but together with the neighbouring villages the population reaches the number of about 17 900. The status of town granted to Jastrebarsko in 1995. The town was named after hawk, a bird whose symbol still stands on its coat of arms. “Jaska”, a popular and familiar form of its name has been in use for centuries as its abbreviation and nickname. The residents are called “Jaskanci” or “Jaskanke”.

The town was first mentioned 1249, in the records of the Podgorska County, as a court centre and market town. As early as 1257 King Bela IV bestowed the privileges and status of a free royal town to Jastrebarsko. Erdödy castle , located in a beautiful old park, is the oldest building in town. Cistercian monastery with St. Mary’s church belongs to 1st category of valuable monuments.

This outstanding sacral structure is renowned for abundance of its Baroque contents and numerous objects of art. The monastery´s library has a valuable collection of old books and maps and its collection of old incunabula ( books printed before 1500) is exceptionally valuable. In Jastrebarsko you can visit the Town Museum and the Art Gallery where the valuable cultural heritage is collected. The Town Museum is situated in attractively restored building of the former Town Hall, in Vladka Mačeka Street 1.

Plešivica, 7 km far from Jastrebarsko, is known for its vineyards and wines. Wine-making has a long tradition in the region. Wine-growing landscapes, sunny slopes and high quality vineyards, skills and experience of wine-growers and wine-makers guarantee really good wine.

The ornithological reserve of Crna Mlaka, 14 km southeast from Jastrebarsko, is preserved almost in its original form. Due to its unique hydrographical and vegetation features and the abundance of bird species, it is a unique bird-watching site in Europe and the world. Yelping eagle, kliktas, river-gulls, black storks, herons, grebes and various species of wilde ducks are just some of the many protected bird species that stay in the area during the largest period of the year. In 1980 Crna Mlaka was proclaimed the special ornithological reserve and put under the special protection.
