Town Velika Gorica

Velika Gorica - CroMapsThe town of  Velika Gorica is located along the Zagreb-Sisak highway and railway, 17 km south-east of Zagreb. Velika Gorica is the centre of the historical Turopolje  region. It was first mentioned in the 13th century. The town has a well-known folk museum that preserves the traditions of the Turopolje area. The area has many interesting buildings.

Beautiful carvings adorn its well-preserved wooden houses and small churches. The finest example of wooden construction is an 18th-century chapel found in Velika Mlaka, while in Scitarjevo there are the ruins of the Roman town of Andautonia. The entire Turopolje region is very picturesque and appeals to hunters, fishermen and nature lovers.

For forty years it has been a site you can’t possibly avoid if you want to learn something more about the history of this region. Newly restored building, it itself played a great role in town’s rich history, because it was the former town hall of the Noble Commune of Turopolje. It is situated in the centre of Velika Gorica, on the eastern part of the main park. Turopolje Museum was founded in 1960. It houses archaeological, ethnographic, cultural and historic collections of Velika Gorica region. Museum materials cover about 3500 objects and over 20 000 photographies and negatives. Each exhibit hides its own story. It’s a little piece in the mosaic of history.

On St. Jurja (April 23) is held traditionally Turopoljsko St. George, picturesque rural tradition that celebrates the spring as a symbol of new life.
