Paklenica National Park

paklenicaPaklenica is situated at the coastal side of the southern part of Velebit. The magnificent canyons of the Paklenica National Park are visible from the Adriatic tourist highway. The most attractive parts are the water-hewn canyons located along the entire length, from Senj to Zrmanja, the valleys of Great and Lesser Paklenica. 400 m high cliffs tower above the Paklenica canyons. Anic-Kuk, the 400 m high rock in that canyon is one of  the most favoured alpine climbing locations in Croatia.

The canyons are not the only point of interest of the Paklenica limestone - water has acted by erosion and corrosion to create numerous caves, the largest and prettiest of them being Manita Pec and Jama Vodarica.

This area between the highest peak of the Velebit (Vaganski vrh,1757 m.) and the sea became a national park in 1949., mainly for its natural scientific and esthetic character. The picturesque flowing streams of the Little and the Big Paklenica give a special feature to this park. The Paklenica National Park has an abundance of flora and fauna. Among the numerous phenomena of the Paklenica are some remarkably beautiful caves among which the Manita Cave must be pointed out, being specially adapted for tourists. Paklenica has attracted nature lovers, excursionists, mountaineers and adventurers for a long time.

The history of mountain-climbing in this park goes back to the, thirties of this century. Paklenica represents a challenge to many alpinists and it has become a world-famous alpinist center. Besides mountaineering, alpinism and freeclimbing, Paklenica offers many other possibilities: excursions, horse-back riding, visits to the Manita Cave, driving mountain bikes, trekking and bird-watching.
